Glossary of geospatial and mapping terms

Easting
The vertical grid reference lines of a map. The reference numbers associated with these lines get bigger from west to east.

Grid Zone
Relates to a particular 100,000 meter square grid that all smaller maps fit into e.g. Blue Mountains 1:25,000 maps belong in Zone 56. You can find this information on the map under "Grid References".
Latitude
Latitude and Longitude These are points on the earths surface that are measured in degrees, minutes and seconds and these are the units that the garmin displays position in.

Northing
The horizontal grid reference lines of a map. The reference numbers associated with these lines get bigger from south to north.
UTM
Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) is a method of defining a map grid. If you've ever looked at a topographic or street map you will be familiar with the grid superimposed over the map.
Waypoint
A point on a route which marks the position of the track or a critical navigation feature such as a bend or a junction.
